The Al Whitson Memorial Holey Board Tournament celebrates the legacy and life of our Alan “Al” Whitson. Al was a wonderful a man, a role model for all, and above all the best husband and father. To celebrate his incredible life his friends and family gather yearly in mid-july by playing the wonderful game of holey board. Starting as tailgating game in the Midwest, Holey board has transformed from a few friends throwing some washers in the back yard to game where we celebrate and remember the life of Al.

For those that blessed to share time with Al, you knew how important it was to him to make anyone feel welcomed and loved. It is with that sprit and his sons’ – George and Harry – love for sports and competition that the Whitson Family created The Al Whitson Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship – given to two Redondo Union High School student-athletes that embodied the Al Whitson sprit. These student-athletes demonstrate hard-work, humility, team work and sacrifice. They may not be the ones who are in the headlines but they are the glue that holds the teams together and supports their teammates to fullest. There is one scholarship given to the golf team and one to the football team.

How does the tournament work?

About the tournament.

The tournament is a world-cup style tournament consists of 32 teams all vying for a chance to be named Champion. Using standard tournament rules , play opens in eight four-team pools in a round-robin format with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the knock out stage. The single elimination knock-out round starts with 16 teams and over the course of the next three rounds is whittled down to the championship round. Here fans gather into the Whitson front lawn to watch the two final teams battle to be named this years Holey Board Champion.
