Tournament Rules

There are the official tournament rules. Please refer here.

1. Set Up
  1. Place boards 10 Feet across from each other.
  2. To start each turn, one player will stand on the board nearest to the other board.
  3. One player will throw all 3 of their washers to attempt to score points. Then, the next player will follow up throwing their 3 washers
2. Scoring
  1. Hole # 1 (the hole closest to you) is equal to 1 point
  2. Hole # 2 (the middle hole) is equal to 3 points
  3. Hole # 3 (the farthest hole) is equal to 5 points
Helpful tip: Scoring should be done at the end of turn to avoid any confusion
  4. If you knock an opponent in, your opponent counts the score
  5. When going for 21, there are more rules to know. (See the “Approaching 21 points and Winning the game” section for more rules!)
3. Turns
After each player throws their washers, the players will change ends to throw for the next turn.
4. Player Order
The player who scores the highest points in their previous turn will throw first.
  1. In the event each player scores the same number of points, the player who threw second in that round will go first for the next round.
  2. If no one scores any points in that round, the order remains the same.
  3. In the event you go over 21, the negative points you scored will still count in deciding who goes first in the next round.
    1. Example: If your score is 17 and you score 5 points. Your score is deducted by 5 points. If your opponent scores 3 points in the same turn, the player who had their points deducted by 5 will go first in the next round.
    2. Think of it as the “absolute value” of the points scored by each player will determine the order for the next round (yes, algebra. Google it if you need to)
5. Canceling Points
  1. After the first player throws their washers, the player who goes second will have the chance to cancel any points scored by the first player.
  2. The player who “cancel” receives the points that the other player would have received.
  3. To “cancel”, the player must land their washer “on top” of the first player’s washer in the same hole.
    1. In the event you are unable to judge which player’s washer is on top of the other, the tie will go to the player who threw second.
      1. Ex: the washers may slide under the hole or fall with another washer in a ‘V’ formation inside the hole making it difficult to determine whose washer is on top.
      2. The “canceling” washer does not need to be fully “on top” of the other washer. Use common sense for this rule.
    2. If the player going first scores 2 washers in the same hole, to cancel, the second thrower must also throw 2 washers in that same hole.
    3. If the second player can only throw one washer in the same hole in which the first player has 2 washers, the scoring will be divided.
      1. If the first player throws 2 washers into the middle 3 point hole, and the second player throws just 1 washer into the same 3 hole, each player will be awarded 3 points.
  4. If you knock an opponent’s washer into a hole where you have already thrown a washer, the opponent’s washer “cancel’s” your points.
  5. If the first thrower goes over 21, the second thrower can “cancel” those points. Resulting in the first thrower NOT going over 21. You may choose to throw given the risk of helping your opponent. You also may choose pass your turn and move onto the next round.
  6. The same risk could be as large as giving your opponent exactly 21. (See “Approaching 21 points and Winning the game” section for more clarification)
  7. If you score exactly 21 by throwing one of your first two washers “on top” of your opponent’s washer, but DO NOT leave your LAST washer on the playing surface. Your points do not count, and your “cancel” does not count. Your opponent receives their points
6. Approaching 21 points and Winning the game
  1. You must score exactly 21 points to win
  2. If you go over 21, you subtract the total points you scored from the number of points you started with on that turn
    1. Example: If your score is 17 and you score 5 points, you deduct 5 points from 17. Your score to start the next round is 12.
    2. If the player going first scores 2 washers in the same hole, to cancel, the second thrower must also throw 2 washers in that same hole.
  3. If you go over 21 on your first washer, any more points scored will add to the amount of points deducted from your score. It is recommended to throw your remaining washers onto the ground (ending your turn)
  4. If you score enough points to get exactly 21 on your last washer, you win!
  5. If you score enough points to get exactly 21 on either your first or second washer you must land your LAST washer on the playing surface. This solidifies your score of 21.
    1. If you have 2 remaining washers, throw the next washer into the ground, leaving you with your LAST washer in your hands. That is the washer you must throw, keeping it on the playing surface.
    2. While attempting to get the LAST washer to land safely on the playing surface; if it goes into a hole, you go over 21. Add all your points and deduct from the amount of points you had to start the round.
  6. If you have scored exactly 21, and your LAST washer does NOT end up on the playing surface, your points DO NOT count. You start the next round with the amount of points you started the previous round with. (Basically, its as if you never scored)
    1. If this happens to the first thrower, the second thrower has an “open board”
  7. In the event of a tie, the game will continue on to the next round. Each player will have the chance to score as many points as they can. The player who scores the most wins. There is no canceling.
    1. Example: Player one will throw all 3 washers. And score a 3. The next player throws all 3 washers and scores a 5. The second player wins.
    2. Example: Player one will throw all 3 washers. And score a 3. The next player throws all 3 washers and scores a 3. It is scored a Push, and the next round begins. This will continue until there is a winner.
